Gene Homologs
Homologs are genes that share many similarities between species descending from a common ancestor. The use of homologs are important in the area of human disease research by providing a simpler organism to use as a model for the disease.
Homologene was used to obtain the homologs for the ABL1 gene. It found seven species that shared a homolog for the ABL1 gene. The E-value was calculated using BLAST comparing the human ABL1 sequence to the other species homolog.

Alignment
Alignmments could not be made using ClustalW, Muscle, or T-Coffee due to the length of the gene sequence. Alignments were found using TreeFam. The boxes found in the TreeFam alignment refer to known Pfam domains SH3, SH2, tyrosine kinase, and F-actin binding. Dark lines and colors show matched sequences while light colored show gaps in the sequence. The vertical dark blue lines indicate splicing boundaries of the gene.

Analysis
Homologs were found in seven species other than humans for the ABL1 gene. These species include chimpanzee, dog, cow, mouse, rat, chicken, and zebrafish. The human ABL1 gene shares the most similarity with its most common ancestor of these species, the chimpanzee followed by other mammals, then the chicken, and finally the zebrafish. The SH3, SH2, and tyrosine kinase domain areas of the gene appear to be highly conserved between species while the younger species appear to have evolved a more complex F-actin binding domain.
