Protein Homologs

Homologs are genes that share many similarities between species descending from a common ancestor.  This homology is often reflected in the protein.  The use of homologs are important in the area of human disease research by providing a simpler organism to use as a model for the disease. 

Homologene was used to determine the protein homologs of tyrosine-protein kinase ABL1 isoform b found in humans.  Seven species were found to contain a protein homolog with humans.  The E-value was determined using BLAST.

Analysis

The protein homology is similar to the gene homology with the chimpanzee having the most similarity with humans.  The protein alignment, unlike the gene alignment, shows the specific sequence similarities and differences making it easier to compare the different species.  T-Coffee alignment was the most beneficial due to its color coding, but all three had similar alignments.
